Tornado hits university library building, nearby houses in Batac City

BATAC CITY, Philippines (Philippines News Agency) — A tornado hit the main library building of the state-run Mariano Marcos State University on Sunday afternoon, destroying some books, computers and other learning materials while tearing roofs off houses nearby, and overturning a motorcycle.

No one was hurt, said Arvin Lumang of the Batac City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC).

As Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 2 remain hoisted over Ilocos Norte, Gov. Imee Marcos announced classes in primary schools on Monday are automatically suspended.

Private schools such as the Northwestern University in Laoag City have also issued advisories suspending classes in primary and secondary schools.

In Carasi town, a man was rescued from drowning through the quick response of the Piddig Bureau of Fire Protection rescue team and Carasi Mayor Rene Gaspar at about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.

According to Senior Fire Officer 4 Edison Reyes of the Piddig BFP, the man was stranded in the Barbaquezo river when floodwaters rose suddenly while he was crossing.
