SMITHFIELD — A tornado possibly touched down late Thursday afternoon outside Smithfield, according to the Fulton County ESDA.

A barn was damaged northeast of the village, according to the agency. No injuries have been reported.

The Smithfield Fire Protection District is checking the area to look for further damage.

“There may be some corn and other field impacts,” ESDA said.

Further, the agency said it had fielded inquiries about tornadoes in the Fairview area just after 5:30 p.m.

“This was from ‘scud’ clouds, or clouds that look like tornadoes,” ESDA said. “They hang down and frankly can be deceiving. They are very common after a storm. There were no tornadoes or tornado touchdowns in the Fairview area. The storm front at that time was around the Liverpool/Little America area.”
