Thanks to “The Wizard of Oz,” Kansas has been pop-culturally immortalized as the land of tornadoes.

In reality, Texas is first in the U.S. when it comes to twister touchdowns, and the month of April is partly to blame.

According to the National Weather Service for Houston-Galveston, Southeast Texas will soon experience one if its two yearly “peaks” in tornado activity.

Starting in April and ending in June, Southeast Texas will be see a statistically higher chance for tornadoes. Between 1992 and 2015, April saw nearly twice as many tornadoes as March.

Still, April, May and June don’t hold a candle to the early Winter months, which see even more tornado activity. November, by a comfortable margin, is the most tornado-ridden month of the year for Texas.

National Weather Service officials advise Houstonians to keep a helmet, pillow or mattress handy during a tornado to act as a shield from debris.
In addition, shoes for broken glass, a whistle or noise-making device to signal for help, and baby and pet food are also recommended.
