CONNERVILLE — “He was a good man,” Jackie Leo Brooks said of his father, Jackie D. Brooks, 76, who died Monday when a tornado ripped through his house.

“He was just a hardworking man. He was born and raised out here, around Connerville. He loved this place; he didn’t ever want to leave it,” he said, sitting on the edge of a pickup’s tailgate, its bed filled with rifles, golf clubs and the few other items he was able to salvage from the remains of his father’s house.

All that was left of the home on Deadman Springs Road was a concrete slab with a ring of cinder blocks on top. Jackie D. Brooks’ barn, carport, shed and a pickup were scattered across the rural Johnston County property.

Tommy M. Brooks, 71, of Wapanucka said he had a gut feeling that it was a member of his family when he was told of a fatality on Deadman Springs Road on Monday night.
