Joplin, Miss. (WTVY) — May 22nd marks the sixth anniversary of the deadly tornado that swept through the community of Joplin, Missouri.

The 2011 tornado was rated an EF-5 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, with estimated winds over 200 miles per hour.

It’s estimated that about 25% of the city was destroyed. The St. John’s Regional Medical Center, a hospital, had to be torn down after a direct hit.

Over 150 lives were lost because of the tornado, and another 1,100 injured.

The damage, one of the highest amounts from any tornado dating back to 1950 at the time, was estimated to be over $2.8 billion.
