Tuesday, July 5, 2016, 12:29 PM – The wild weather ride continues across Quebec as severe summer thunderstorms spawn the third tornado of the season.
“On Monday, July 4, strong to severe thunderstorms moved across some areas of central Quebec,” says Environment Canada in a weather summary issued Tuesday morning. “These storms mainly affected the Saguenay and Lac St-Jean areas where uprooted trees, power outages, and the third tornado of the year were reported.”
The tornado, which hit an area of Métabetchouan-Lac-à-la-Croixat around 3:15 p.m., was given a strength rating of EF0.
“It uprooted trees and damaged a farm building,” EC says.
Broken trees, small hail and damaging wind gusts were also reported as the line of storms swept through during the afternoon and evening hours.
Conditions were much calmer on Tuesday, although extreme heat is building into southern parts of the province.
“This could actually mark the start of a heatwave for southerly regions,” says The Weather Network’s sister station MeteoMedia. “A heat wave in Quebec is a period of a minimum of three consecutive days when the mercury reaches 30 degrees or more.”
The threat for more severe thunderstorms return Wednesday and Thursday as the passage of a cold front helps to create unstable conditions.
