SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – A tornado badly damaged a daycare, and brought down trees and power lines when it tore through the south side of South Bend Sunday night.

The storm tore the roof off of the Growing Kids Learning Center on Ireland Road, and left a large hole in a front portion of the building. The tornado also heavily damaged the back of the building, fire official said.

The daycare will be closed Monday, according to the Growing Kids Learning Center Facebook page. Growing Kids is working to inform families of the closing.

As of 6 a.m, more than 800 people in the area are without power. Downed trees were also reported in the Irish Hills Apartments area.

A team from the National Weather Service is expected in South Bend Monday to survey the damage, and determine the tornado’s intensity based on the EF scale.
