EF2 Tornado Causes Significant Damage to Homes Near Homer, Illinois

An EF2 tornado touched down near Homer, Illinois, Friday night, causing significant damage to homes.

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office reported two residences and a corn crib were destroyed. There were no injuries.

According to The News-Gazette, a large portion of the roof of a two-story house was torn off. The occupants, four adults and two children, took shelter in the basement and were not harmed. A house on County Road about 2 miles west of Illinois Route 49 and 2 miles south of Homer was also destroyed.

“It totaled the house,” Homer Fire Chief Don Happ told the Gazette. “It’s all shoved into the basement and into the field.”

According to the National Weather Service, the storm destroyed three outbuildings and knocked a house off of its foundation, causing it to collapse. A car and a large RV were damaged and a barn was destroyed less than a mile away.

The twister also entered a cemetery where it damaged several headstones and two trees.

At least four tornadoes were confirmed in Illinois by the NWS, based on storm reports. Officials are still investigating into the other storms.

“A line of thunderstorms produced multiple possible tornado touchdowns on Friday evening in eastern Illinois and western Indiana,” weather.com digital meteorologist Jonathan Belles said.

Homes near Liberty Lake, Illinois, suffered blown out windows, The News-Gazette also reported.

Greg Knott, Parkland College board member, told the Gazette, “The path of it had to be Camp Drake and we called off the Boy Scout event. I watched the funnel from Homer Lake Road but didn’t see any damage.”
