This is the dramatic moment a giant red tornado ripped through the Chinese countryside.

The giant column of wind was spotted on July 30 in Xuwen County, Guangdong province, reports the People’s Daily Online.

Seven people were injured and over 500 houses were damaged during the storm.

Footage filmed by an onlooker from a fair distance shows the red giant column of wind ripping across the Chinese countryside.

According to WRAL.com, the colour of a tornado depends on a variety of factors including direction and elevation of the sun and also cloud cover.

It also depends on what kind of surface the tornado is passing over. Therefore a tornado passing over sand would be a red colour.

Seven people were injured during the storm with four of them in hospital.

545 houses were also damaged by the powerful weather.

Guangdong often sees tornadoes in spring and early summer which is also peak cyclone season.

The province has a relatively flat terrain and therefore is a tornado prone area.

Rescue teams have been dispatched to the area and are resettling those affected.
