VINTON — A small tornado hit the southeast side of Vinton shortly after 5 a.m., Sunday, badly damaging several apartment buildings and homes including The Imperial Apartments and the Abbe Center.

Other structures heavily damaged included an apartment building owned by Brian Hamling at which a roof was ripped off one side of a two-story apartment building and a 2×4 board shot through the side of one apartment. A garage was also demolished.

It appeared the tornado touched down at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School baseball diamond, traveled east striking a two-story apartment building housing four units, a private house, the Abbe Center, Hamling’s apartments, The Imperial and at least two other structures.
