Five-year anniversary of deadly tornadoes

BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The devastation left behind by dozens of tornadoes in 2011 continues to be etched in the minds of eastern North Carolinians.

A confirmed 30 tornadoes struck North Carolina on April 16, and Saturday marked the fifth anniversary.

Of 24 people who died across the state, 12 of those deaths happened in Bertie County.

Many people have spent the last five years rebuilding their homes.

Greene County was also hit hard by the tornadoes and received damages nearing $30 million dollars.

The month of April in 2011 remains the most active month on record in the United States with a total of 758 tornadoes reported.
