Flooding, Tornadoes Impact South-Central States

Tornadoes were spotted and flooding began to inundate parts of Texas as strong to severe thunderstorms continued impacting the south-central United States this weekend.

Here are the latest state-by-state impacts:

Texas

Late Saturday afternoon, a storm spotter reported a brief tornado in northwestern Kent County. A second tornado was also reported near Hermleigh, Texas, that evening.

Severe thunderstorms produced large hail to the size of golfballs in Big Spring and Clarendon.

Events scheduled for Sunday had to be canceled due to the weather.

Rain forced the Texas Rangers to postpone their game with the Baltimore Orioles, their first rainout in almost three years, WFAA reports. The Frisco RoughRiders also had to cancel their game versus Arkansas due to the inclement weather, and the Ennis Bluebonnet Trails Festival was canceled as well.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport saw 285 delays and 236 cancellations due to the weather, according to FlightAware. At one point, delays were 46 minutes to and hour long.

Flooding was also spotted in areas of the Lone Star state.

Several cars stalled out in downtown Clifton due to high water Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Highway 199 south of Jacksboro was closed due to high water and law enforcement reported that northbound Highway 281 near Mineral Wells had taken on flooding Sunday, NWS also reports.

The S-curve on McMillen Road was closed due to high water Sunday and flooding north of Venus shut down Farm to Market 157 at County Route 509, according to WFAA.

There were reports of hail to the size of tennis balls (2.5 inches in diameter) near Dalhart Friday evening.

Oklahoma

Storm spotters reported seeing tornadoes near Guymon, Oklahoma, Friday, as well as multiple tornadoes in the panhandle. There were reports of 10 tornadoes, according to NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center.

Four of the twisters in the Eva and Yarbrough area were confirmed by Texas County Emergency Management, who reported there were no injuries but electricity was knocked out due to downed power lines.

A power line was downed on Highway 64 and emergency management officials advised residents to avoid traveling in that area. A search and rescue team was deployed to the scene as a precaution.

Saturday the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported that Highway 95 was closed north of U.S. Highway 412 due to water over the roads, according to the Associated Press. Highways 412, 64 and 56 reopened Saturday afternoon after being shut down for three hours due to the flooding.

Kansas

Widespread flooding was reported in Morton and Gray counties Friday, according to KSN.com. Water was reportedly over many roads, including K-51 Highway. Officials said power lines were down and cattle were loose in many areas.

Weather officials in Dodge City said locals reported hail up to 2 inches in size Friday night, KSN also reports.
