CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) – At least one weak, short-lived tornado is responsible for some of the damage seen Tuesday in Clayton County, National Weather Service officials confirmed Wednesday afternoon.
A Tornado Warning was issued around 1:35 p.m. as a line of powerful storms was moving through the metro Atlanta area. That storm was packing winds of 40 mph with gusts as high as 70 mph.
The FOX 5 Storm Chaser spotted damage in several neighborhoods including the Forest Park and Lake City area where an EF-0 tornado was confirmed to have touched down.
A survey team found the first notable damage from the tornado happened at an apartment complex off Georgia Highway 85 between Forest Park and Riverdale. Multiple trees were snapped, shingles ripped from the apartment roof, and some trees were uprooted along Pineridge Drive between Virginia Circle and Ash Street.
The end of the damage appears to have ended around School Lane where large tree limbs fell on a home. There was also some damage in the Ellenwood area just east of Interstate 675, which survey crews believe was related to the tornado incident.
The tornado traveled north-northeast for three miles cutting a path about 100 yards wide with winds of about 75 mph, the weather service said, staying on the ground for about six minutes.
There were no injuries reported associated with the tornado.
The National Weather Service said they will continue to survey the area and will update if they find any further evidence of tornadic activity.
